Plans and limits change. Official pricing pages: Semrush, SE Ranking, Moz, Mangools (affiliate link). On 6 November 2026, Semrush's pricing page still showed daily rank-tracking allowances of 500, 1,500 and 5,000+ keywords. Confirm which named plan includes which allowance. Mangools' dollar prices are not reprinted here: the price table is loaded separately, and this page does not quote a figure it did not capture.

How we evaluated

Scores on this page are editorial scores out of 10. They are a judgment from the provider's product, pricing and documentation pages, using the weights below. They are not user ratings, lab results, or a ranking anyone paid for. A price is only as current as the date written next to it. The research methodology covers what we do not do.

How this page was made: from each provider's official product and pricing pages and its public documentation, read on the date named in the page. We have not run a hands-on test, lab benchmark, or paid user study for this page. A step-by-step section describes the vendor's published flow. It is not a test we performed.

Local SEO tool jobs

Compare Moz Local, Semrush local tools and SE Ranking.

Walkthrough: a multi-location audit

  1. List every location with its exact name, address and phone.
  2. Use a listings tool to scan major directories for inconsistencies.
  3. Fix inconsistencies at the source directories.
  4. Set up local rank tracking per location.
  5. Monitor reviews and respond.

SEO glossary

Search intent
What the searcher is trying to accomplish.
Keyword difficulty
A tool's estimate of how hard it is to rank; computed differently by each tool.
SERP
Search engine results page.
Backlink
A link from another site to yours.
Canonical tag
Tells search engines the preferred version of a page.
Share of voice
Your visibility for a keyword set compared with competitors.

Running your first site audit

Site audit tools crawl your site like a search engine and flag technical issues. To get value without drowning in warnings:

  1. Crawl the whole site, including subdomains you care about, and exclude admin or staging areas.
  2. Fix errors that block indexing first: pages returning errors, broken redirects, accidental noindex tags and blocked resources.
  3. Then fix issues affecting many pages, such as duplicate titles or missing canonical tags, usually at the template level.
  4. Treat minor warnings as a backlog, not an emergency.
  5. Re-crawl after fixes and schedule regular crawls so new problems are caught early.

Turning keyword data into content that ranks

Keyword data tells you what people search; it doesn't write a useful page. Before writing, list the questions a searcher needs answered, look at what top-ranking pages cover and where they fall short, and add something they lack: first-hand experience, a clearer walkthrough, an original comparison or better examples. Use content tools' term suggestions as a checklist, not a target density. Update important pages when facts change, and show when they were last reviewed.

Every tool builds its own link index by crawling the web, so link counts and authority scores differ between tools and none match Google's internal view. Use them for comparison and discovery: see which pages on competitor sites attract links, find unlinked mentions of your brand, and spot broken pages on other sites where your content could be a replacement. Authority metrics such as Moz's Domain Authority are third-party estimates, not Google metrics, so treat them as rough guides when prioritising outreach.

Refreshing content that has slipped

Pages that used to rank often slip because competitors published something more complete or facts went stale. Find pages with falling clicks in Search Console, search their main keyword and compare what now ranks, then update: correct outdated facts, add missing sections, improve examples, tighten the introduction and update the review date. Re-check rankings over the following weeks.

Internal linking: the underused lever

Internal links help search engines discover pages and understand which ones matter most, and they help readers find the next useful page. Link from strong, frequently visited pages to the pages you want to rank. Group content into topic clusters, with a main guide linking to detailed pages and those linking back. Use descriptive anchor text rather than "click here". Audit tools can list orphan pages with no internal links pointing to them; fix those first.

Technical SEO priorities for small sites

  1. Make sure important pages return a 200 status and aren't blocked by robots rules or noindex tags.
  2. Submit an XML sitemap in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  3. Use HTTPS everywhere and redirect old URLs properly when you change them.
  4. Keep pages fast on mobile, mainly by managing images and scripts.
  5. Avoid duplicate versions of pages; use canonical tags where duplicates are unavoidable.

How to trial an SEO tool in a week

  1. Add your site and two competitors as a project.
  2. Run a site audit and note whether its top issues match what you already know.
  3. Research ten keywords you care about and judge whether the ideas are useful.
  4. Set up rank tracking for those keywords in your target location.
  5. Look up one competitor's top pages and backlinks.
  6. Build the report you'd send monthly.

Choose the tool that answered your real questions fastest.

Measuring whether SEO is working

Rankings are a leading indicator; business results are the goal. Track organic sessions to key pages, conversions from organic traffic (leads, sales, sign-ups), and impressions and clicks in Search Console for target query groups. Compare periods of the same length and season, and annotate when you publish or change major pages so you can connect cause and effect. Expect new pages to take time to settle.

Spending a small SEO budget wisely

If budget is tight, start with free tools for your own data and pay for one tool for research. Use monthly billing until you know which features you use. Many teams buy a higher plan for a month to run a big research project, then downgrade. Spend the rest of the budget on content and improvements, since tools only surface opportunities; the work captures them.

Setting up rank tracking properly

Common mistakes with SEO tools

On-page checklist for every important page

Most SEO tools' on-page checkers flag these items; use them as reminders rather than scoring targets.

Comparing SEO tool costs fairly

SEO tools price by plan tier with limits on projects, tracked keywords, audit pages, reports and users. Extra users and toolkits are often add-ons. List your needs: number of sites, tracked keywords, update frequency, users and whether you need white-label reports. Then price that configuration on each official pricing page, and compare annual and monthly billing.

AI search and SEO tools

Search results increasingly include AI-generated answers. Several SEO platforms have added features to monitor brand visibility in AI answers. The basics still apply: clear, accurate, well-structured content from a credible source, with facts that are easy to quote. Treat AI-visibility metrics as early-stage and directional.

A keyword research workflow that works in any tool

  1. Start from seed topics your customers actually use, not internal jargon. Customer emails, sales calls and support tickets are good sources.
  2. Expand each seed into related keywords and questions using the tool's keyword ideas report.
  3. Group by intent. Separate informational searches ("how to"), commercial investigation ("best", "vs", "review") and transactional ones ("pricing", "buy").
  4. Check the results page yourself. Search the keyword and look at what ranks. If the top results are all a different page type from what you plan, adjust.
  5. Estimate difficulty realistically. Each tool computes difficulty differently; compare relative scores within one tool rather than across tools.
  6. Map one primary keyword to one page to avoid several of your pages competing for the same search.
  7. Prioritise by business value first, then by difficulty and volume.
